Guest Post: Connections by Paula Tansey

Connections

My uncle and godfather worked for a NASA subcontractor back in the day. His work included work on the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) that took the astronauts from their capsule to the moon. If you saw the movie “Apollo 13” with Tom Hanks you will recall that the astronauts were running out of oxygen due to an overloaded CO2 thing-a-mabob (not to be confused with “Thing-a-majig”, please) and a fix had to be improvised. There is a scene where Ed Harris dumps a load of ‘stuff’ on the table and tells the engineers something like, “This is what they have in the spaceship, make it work”. My uncle was one of the engineers in the room; in real life, not the movie J I’ve always been proud of my ‘connection’ to the moon and space has always fascinated me. I could never be an astronaut though because I am claustrophobic and heights don’t thrill me either. Joining Moon Joggers lets me travel to the moon and make connections with the many folks who are on this mission with me.

Moon Joggers also lets me engage my other fascination – people. I’m not what most folks would consider an extrovert – although as I get older my shyness has faded by degrees – but I love people. Running has introduced me to many people and adventures that I’m sure I wouldn’t have had otherwise. While running – or talking about running – the walls come down and suddenly I’m telling relative strangers things that my close friends and family may not know yet – or had to wait a long time to find out. And just like that ‘strangers’ become friends. Our common bond – walking and running – creates a connection like no other.

If you are new to running and walking – take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to connect with others who share your new hobby addiction. It might be the Moon that brought us together but it’s the people that will keep us here.

I’m relatively new to running (2008) and the only thing I’m an expert on is me. And that’s my advice to everyone in this group– new or experienced. Become an expert on yourself. Learn what works for you. Listen to others, ask for help, and maybe even try things that other suggest. But don’t expect everyone else’s solutions to make sense for you. If someone else’s plan, pace, nutrition trick, favorite gear, etc. doesn’t work for you it’s because the solution for you is something else. Keep trying and you’ll find it.

Connect with others but in the end compare yourself only to you. Compete only with yourself.

My name is Paula Tansey. I live in Media, Pennsylvania with my husband Dave. I’m a happy dork whose goal in life is to finish and have fun and to try to make a difference while I’m at it. Moon Joggers: Week 1 Results

Congratulations Moon Joggers on an INCREDIBLE week one!  We are amazed by the miles completed by our team and so impressed by each of you.   Whether you ran 100 miles this week, or walked 3 miles this week, each step counted and will help us make our destination to the moon!  Check out this video for the results:

We’ve received a few more week one totals from fellow Moon Joggers and our total is over 21,066 miles for the week!

The distance around the entire earth is a little over 24,000 miles.  Keep in mind, week one only consisted of six days, if it had been seven we would have run more than that distance around the earth!  HOW COOL IS THAT???  I guess that means in week two we expect to run further into space, and more than enough miles to run around the globe!

Week 1: 21,066 miles in six days!

3,511.1 miles per day

146.3 miler per hour!!!

WE CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IN WEEK 2!   KEEP ON MOVING!

TO THE MOON!

Share Your Story

Hello Moon Jogger Team!

We hope that your New Year is going great and that each of you have left the planet earth and are now moving through space on your way to the moon!  With the amount of participants we have and how many miles our team has already put in, we hope to make a MOON LANDING sometime in March, if not sooner.  Things are getting very exciting for Moon Joggers and we thank you for your patience as we strive to create an unforgettable experience for each of you this year.  We want the mission to run smoothly, for logging miles to be simple and for our international team of Moon Joggers to unite and support each other along the way.

So thank you for choosing to be a Moon Jogger and making the commitment to a life of activity and better health.  It’s not always easy to get out there and walk or run, but it’s always worth it! Not only does physical activity improve your physical health, but it lifts your spirits, brings clarity to your mind and happiness to your soul.  We have over a million miles to run this year and we look forward to taking each step with you.

As already mentioned, we have a goal of uniting our team of Moon Joggers and creating a support system for everyone.  This is not only about getting to the moon, but making friends along the way.  To help us reach that goal, we would love to spotlight as many Moon Joggers as possible.  One way to do this is to do a spotlight video.  It’s a great way for you to introduce yourself to the team, to share your story and to receive support, motivation and a lot cheering on from fellow Moon Joggers.

One day we hope to be able to travel to each of you and meet you, walk/run a few miles with you and be able to interview you and share your stories.  Until then, we would like for you to send us a few video clips of yourselves that we can turn into a spotlight video to share with others.  For an example of this, check out the Spotlight video (Spotlight #1: Brittany Boyd) in the post below, or view it by clicking here.   This will give you a good idea of what we are looking for.

If this is something you are interested in doing, please leave a comment at the bottom of this post and we will contact you. We all have a story to share and your story is worth sharing!

Thanks Moon Joggers and Happy Space Travels!

Ang & Ash
